How green revolution has made India self -sufficient in food grains?

In the late 1960 's, t he Green Revolution introduced the Indian farmer to the cultivation of high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of seeds. The HYVs (coupled with chemical fertilisers and pesticides) led to a growth in the productivity of food grains (especially wheat and rice) , thereby helping India attain self-sufficiency in food grains. i) In India, after Green Revolution, production of many crops has increased many times. The production of wheat was just 88 lakh tonnes in 1955-56.Now it has crossed 718 lakh tonnes. ii) After Independence,India was dependant on other countries for its foodgrain requirements but now our imports of foodgrains are negligible. iii) The minimum buffer norms for FCI are 24.3 million tonnes but due to the success of the green revolution ,the stock is much more than the minimum norms. iv) it has maintained uninterrupted supply of food grains throughout India and throughout the year. v) Since the advent of the Green Revolution, the country has avoided famine even during adverse weather conditions.
