During the Great Famine of the 1880s the population of Ireland was halved from 8 million to 4 million. 2 million people died from starvation and disease (the plague) and 2 million emmigrated, mostly to England and America. 1845 or 'Black 45' saw the greatest number of deaths, though emmigration continued on long after this date.

Catholics live all over Ireland, as do Protestants. Northern Ireland is known for having a greater number of Protestants than other parts of Ireland, but there are lots of Catholics there too and lots of Protestants in other parts of Ireland.

Due to the troubled history of Northern Ireland in the latter 20th century, the country saw little to almost no immigration from other parts of the world. In the past decade, from 2000 to 2012, with the ongoing success of the Peace Process and the freedom of movement of the borderless EU, a growing number of people from Poland and other eastern Europe nations have come to settle and work in Northern Ireland. Small numbers of Poles, Slovakians, Romanians and an even smaller Roma gypsy population have taken up residency although most use Northern Ireland as a place to work and save money before returning home. The next decade will tell how permanent these ethnic minorities have become. In terms of ethnicity, the population of Northern Ireland is almost entirely white (99.15%). 91% of people are Northern Ireland born, with 4.8% being born elsewhere in the UK and 2.3% being born in the Republic of Ireland. Irish Travellers accounted for 0.1% of the population. The largest non-white ethnic groups were Asians (0.4%), of which Chinese accounted for 60.7%, Indian for 23% and Pakistani for 9.8% of the total. Black people of various origins accounted for 0.06% of the population of Northern Ireland and people of mixed ethnicity accounted for 0.2%.
