It depends on how you like your shots and which way you prefer to develop them. Always go with an SLR. The name brand is your choice. Remember it is not the camera that makes it, it's the photographer, and your own perception on which you would like to capture your image. Whether you prefer a digital SLR or non-digital is your choice.

It depends on what you want to do with a camera.
For a convenient, small camera to carry with you, there are many compact cameras that will slip in a pocket or purse.
If you want to work on more serious photography, consider a digital SLR. They have interchangeable lenses that are more effective than the lenses on compact cameras. have a huge range of accessories to tailor the camera to different applications and are generally more robust than most compacts. They are also much heavier and much larger and of course are more expensive.
Whichever route you choose, aim for the best you can afford. Look at the big names in photography - Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Pentax are all fine manufacturers but there are many more to choose from.
