The United States district courts are the general trial courts of the United States federal court system. Both civil and criminal cases are filed in the district court, which is a court of law, equity, and admiralty. Each federal judicial district has at least one courthouse, and many districts have more than one. The formal name of a district court is "the United States District Court for" the name of the district-for example, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. There are 89 districts in the 50 States, with a total of 94 districts including territories. Bankruptcy is a Federal matter. All BK courts are Federal Circuit Courts. They are named for the area they generally service...like US Federal Bankruptcy Court for the District of Northern Arizona....or such. To facilitate handling of cases, the Courts tend to interpret certain areas of the Law as best fits their regions...as in Community Property states compared to ones that aren't, what is the definition of real estate, that type of thing. But the BK laws are really the same anywhere in the country.
