The standard 1157 or similar two filament bulbs contain an upper (small diameter) filament for the parking lights and a lower (larger diameter) filament for the brake and flasher applications. The new LEDS operate from one diode.

Why does the brake light not light up on 1997 Quest when you turn on the light but it light when you brake?

Brake lights only come on when you press the pedal. The brake light is either a different bulb or filament in a dual-filament bulb than the tail light.

Can a bad bulb cause all brake lights in a 98 ford ranger to fail?

It can if it is a dual filament bulb as found on most US. makes. The brake light filament can short over to the tail light filament inside the bulb and when the brakes light is activated, all the tail lights and front marker lights will light also, probably blowing fuses.

Where is the brake relay on the Chevy Express van?

Why do you have no brake lights when applying brakes?

Because something's wrong, of course. What it could be... bad switch, break/short in the wiring, bad fuse or relay, or even just bad bulbs.. chances are, your car uses dual filament bulbs for the brake lights, where they'll function as both marker lights (with one filament active) and brake lights (with both filaments energized).

Why don't the brake lights work on my Chevy Venture van 2000?

If the brake lights do not work on Chevy Venture van 2000, try to disconnect the brake switch. Then short the two contacts of the connector to check if the brake lights are now working.

What would make your brake lights not work?

The most likely cause is a bad brake light switch (if none of the brake lights illuminate) but if its only one of the brake lights, try changing the bulb. Even if they still work as running or turn lights because they have a double filament and may still work partially, but not as brake lights.

Why do your running lights work but not your brake lights on your 91 Chevy?

on the brake pedal under the dash is a brake light switch. that when you depress the brake it turns your lights on. you might wanna check that

What can I check on my Chevy Silverado to see why my brake lights aren't working?

the connection between the battery and the brake lights

Why does a bad turn signal switch effect the brake lights?

Since most brake/turn use the same filament in the bulb(1157) then if the turn signal switch is bad or offset then it will effect the brake lights.

Why would a 2002 Chevy Express brake lights work when the headlights are off but when you the headlights are turned on the brake lights are on and go off when you press the pedal?

i found it to be the tail light harnesses go bad . a common problem with them because the bulb sockets short out.
