Can a bad fuel filter cause the gas gauge to fail in Pontiac Aztek?

The Aztek has been known to have screwy gas gauges. Mine "floats" from E to F and sometimes shows the actual level. I've heard it's a bad sending unit in the tank causing the problem. If your gauge just lies there, it's probably that the sending unit is done.

What is a speedometer head as referenced for a 1996 GEO tracker speedometer noise. Is it the whole unit or a part of the speedometer?

I believe the head is the part of the speedometer that is directly behind the faceplate of the gauge. It takes the input from the cable spinning at X rpm's (or sensor if electronic) and converts it mechanically into what your speedometer gauge indicates on the faceplate.
