In the French Revolution they were termed Royalists and in the American Revolution they were called Loyalists. Royalists were not exclusively Nobles and many commoners remained firmly in the camp of the Monarchy by choice. During the American Revolution about 20% or roughly 600,000 Americans were Loyalists. When the war was over the vast majority remained in the US and became loyal and patriotic Americans. Some became instant Canadians and many Southern Loyalists went to British Caribbean Islands and took with them about two thousand slaves to start their new life. A small number went home to England.

In France many of the Royalists left the nation to estates that they owned in other countries like Austria, Germany or the Netherlands to wait things out. They were considered Enemies of the State and the Revolution and their French Estates were plundered and became State Property. Canada was blessed by the presence of new settlers and America was sorely injured by the loss of so many of their Best and Brightest.
