The biggest crisis in the history of the federalist system in the US occurred during the Brown v. Board of education of Topeka. The very foundation of the constitution was being questioned and a solution that was outside the ordinary was being sought out. It was the state's law whether or not they would allow segregation and since slavery was abolished with the new amendments to the constitution the states were violating the equal protection of the law. The very essence of states' authority was being questioned and thus almost had a tragic effect where the federalism of America could have fallen.
