depends what you call better
the Mazda will outrun the z
however if you live where it gets colder you might want to go witht he z like i did
the Mazda 8 uses a rotary engine
rotary engines don't like the cold much and tend not to run as well in colder weather

07MT 350z rwhp - 265/230tq
07MT RX-8 BRAKE HP- 232/159tq
I don't believe at all the RX8 will outrun the 350z. Even though the 8 weighs 400lbs lighter than the 350z, 0-60 times will tell.
350z - 5.2 seconds
RX8 - 6.1 seconds
And if you plan on driving in the snow, the Z will not do well unless you have sandbags and full blown snow tires. I cannot say about the RX8.
Both roughly the same price, I'd say go with the Z.
Nissan doesn't even build their diesel engines. Nissan Diesel was bought by Volvo in 2007. Side note: in 2015 Nissan will offer a Cummins in the Titan truck. Mazda is owned by Ford and has produced its own diesel engine for years. They are currently built in the Ford factory in Dagenham, London, England.
