At an early age students are identified as potential officer candidates. The majority of the enlisted force is drafted into service. The usual length of service is three years with the exception of the Russian navy which is four. After completing the mandatory time they can reenlist. Conditions in the Russian military have been rebounding after the fall of the Soviet Union. From poverty like conditions in the late 1990's till today have improved drastically. But nothing like the time of the Soviet Union. During that time the Soviet military had a huge budget. The Russians have the army, marines, navy and air force just as the United States. Basic training is similar but conditions in Russia are harsher than the US. US Military basic trainees have it much easier but still have to attain a high degree of military knowledge and skills. The Russian military does not allow for new members to be trained in a technical field. Not until they show they have career aspirations does the military spend money to train them. Both nations must fight Morale issues. Keeping the members excited, motivated and eager to learn and perform. When it comes to the more specialized units in each military the strain is increased on the members looking to be assigned to,these units. The washout rate is high. Because these units can and must be selective. This is the same for both nations military. The Russian military tends to operate through the use of fear. More the fear of bodily harm or death. The US has fear but it is,the fear of failure. So as to which is best. My opinion through 27 years of service around the world , I will say the United States. Because of,the diverse group of individuals, that is highly trained and all volunteer. But if you ask me if the,US military is the best in the world, I say no. But that opens up a book long answer that is subjective.

There have been times in history that it could be argued that the Russian Army or the army of the former Soviet Union had more weapons, or more troops, but this is no indication of might. Consider for a moment that the US Army was on the ground in Vietnam for over twenty years. The US Army then as now was one of the most technologically advanced military forces in the world. Yet, that a bunch of low tech jungle fighters effectively kicked the snot out of us proves that mass and might do not equate to stronger or better. The Russian military is nothing to hold in low regard. Their soldiers are as tough and as well trained as any of the best. It is the structure of a nation's military and the leaders at the top who determine its effectiveness, however. The current Russian Army is by this premise no stronger or better than the US Army nor any less so.
