It is possible for smoke from a wood heater or fireplace to attach itself to the wall where the studs are located. Somehow the studs act like a magnet, I have had this happen in three homes previously.
Get a good stud finder and make a drawing of where the studs are. Get a good 'pin nailer' and compressor , then attach the sheets to the studs with 1. 9 " nails .

Just completed similar rebuild 3 years ago. Hired the original builder and after watching realized I could do this myself. The support behind the pool walls should be similar to that of interior walls in your home. There should be a stud (2x4) spaced evenly every 16". Remove the old walls without damaging the stud support behind them. Inspect the studs, a-frame braces if present, or steel frame if present, for rust, corrosion, insect damage, or wood rot. If the wall is rotted, then the studs supporting that wall may need to be replaced. Place new wood, 1/2' or 5/8' pressure treated, by screwing or nailing into the studs. Scatter the seams so that 4 corners of the new wall material nerver come together. Install the the liner and fill.
Yes as long as the building construction is using wood wall studs.
