Which is older, Judaism or Paganism?

Paganism has been around since before the time of Adam and Judaism came much later.

Answer 2Paganism isn't a single unified religion as such but is the general name referring to mainly ancient (as well as some modern) pantheistic/polytheistic nature based religions. Faiths such as Asatru and Wicca would be considered pagan and actually predate Judaism. Greek, Roman, Norse, Celtic paganism as practised by the ancients are obviously a lot older. Answer 3Actually, Jewish beliefs are older than paganism. Not Judaism itself, but the Jewish belief in One God. Jewish tradition holds that the first few generations worshiped the One God; and paganism was invented only after that. See the attached Related Link. If you can read German, look for a set of books called Der Ursprung Der Gottesidee (full title Der Ursprung der Gottesidee: Eine Historisch-Kritische und Positive Studie), by P. Wilhelm Schmidt. This extensive archaeological and historical study shows that belief in One God was the original state of affairs.

There is no single thing called Paganism. Rather, each tribe or nation of related tribes had its own paganism. It is clear that the thousands of tribes of early humans in the years before Abraham or Moses had lots of beliefs that we today would describe as pagan, so there were many forms of paganism older than Judaism. I suspect that many of these ancient pagans would be quite puzzled by the syncretism of modern neopagans, who pick and choose traditions from whatever earlier pagan traditions they find attractive.
