Take the Crescent from Atlanta to New York Penn Station. Then take the Acela Express to Boston's South Station.
Amtrak does not serve Long Island. The best way to go is to drive to New Rochelle and take the Northeastern Service to Boston from there.
Direct train service from Boston to Montreal was discontinued in 1965. In 2003 a study examining the feasibility of high speed rail service gave a positive assessment of the potential of resuming Boston-Montreal service. Subsequently, the corridor has been placed on the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration's list of 10 designated high-speed rail corridors (potential).
If one wishes to make reservations online with Amtrak the best place is on the Amtrak website. One has the option to make reservations from the site or by calling the number and booking by phone.
two busses and Amtrak train, would be my guess
Unfortunately, there is not Amtrak service in New Hampshire except along the Atlantic Coast. White River Junction, VT is the closest train station to Meredith. You would have to take the Lake Shore Limited from Boston to Springfield and change to the Vermonter to White River Junction. Your best bet is probably taking the Concord Coach from Logan Airport or the South Station to Meredith. There are two buses a day each way.
Take the Amtrak train. You will get to relax and enjoy the scenery and see some views you would never see from the air or from inside a car.
mostly any passenger train would be perfect for the childeren, especially the long distance trains, such as, the Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, California Zehyr, etc.
The best way, if this is a group, is to request a private car from Amtrak. Although not the cheapest, it is the only way to travel together. The price will change depending on which train, when, and how quickly you book the tickets - prices can be more than double per ticket as you get close to the departure date. The only way to get a price that is worthwhile at all is to get the Amtrak quote. Please use the link shown below which takes you to the Amtrak site that can give you the exact cost in seconds.
You cannot get a train directly to the airport. However, you can get a train from NY Penn Station, and your best bet of the multiple Amtrak stops in San Francisco would be to stop at the Caltrain Station and catch a cab to the airport (11.7 miles, 17-20 minutes depending on traffic).
If one is interested in purchasing train tickets to the east coast of the United States the best option would be to book through Amtrak or on the company site. One can also book train travel through sites such as Train Ticket or Vacation Spirit.
