knoppix could probably run on that, but it is primarily a live disk os, so it might have issues if you want to use it as a desktop or server
256 MB of RAM.
Two RAMs of 128 is no better than having straight 256 RAM, because even though you are dividing the RAM up it still equals up to 256 RAM. This means that having two 128 RAMs will work just the same as using one 256 RAM.
256 MB of RAM.
Depending on how much RAM is installed, the ThinkPad G40 can run almost any 32-bit distro. It shipped with either 128 or 256 MB of RAM, and supports up to 1 GB.128 MB of RAM - This is pretty low for many distros. Examples of distros that would run moderately well on it include Damn Small Linux, Tiny Core Linux, Puppy Linux, PCFluxboxOS, antiX, Vector Linux, or SliTaz.256 MB of RAM - Distros that would perform well, in addition to the aforementioned ones, include Xubuntu, Debian (with Xfce desktop), and Lubuntu.512 MB of RAM - Many distros should run decently on this. PCLinuxOS, openSUSE, and Fedora all have this as the recommended minimum.1 GB of RAM - Practically all distros should run on this, including Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Linux Mint. Note that because of the relatively weak processor and poor graphics chipset, you may still be better off with a lighter distro.
Whatever you have. Linux can be run on a wide range of specifications. Some distros, like Damn Small Linux, only require a 486 with 16 MB of RAM, and 50 MB of hard drive space, something you could have had in 1994. Typical requirements are 256 to 5.12 MB of RAM, a Pentium III or better processor, and 2 to 6 GBs of hard drive space
Based on its sheer configurability, a modern Linux kernel takes the cake by far. it is still possible to use a modern kernel with a basic userland in 4 MB of RAM.
Xfce is a GTK+ based desktop environment for Linux. It is similar in many respects to GNOME, but is designed to use less RAM.
256MB RAM, 1/4 of 1GB of RAM, is an amount of computer memory (Random Access Memory)
By today's standards 256mb ram is pretty low.
256
Yes it can be added, but sometimes 512 MB RAM may be treated as 256 MB RAM as the slots on which they areplaced have the same priorities. It is always recommended to use RAMs with same memory spaceor a single RAM amounting to the sum of RAMs is best.
