The Southwest coast of England (Lands End and coastal Cornwall in general) and parts of Southern Ireland, benefit from the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream originates in the Gulf of Mexico and moves warm water Northeast across the Atlantic Ocean.

It is not uncommon to see palm trees and some other subtropical plants in Western Cornwall .

What ocean current contributes to Iceland's climate?

The Gulf Stream, originating in the Gulf of Mexico, passing the US east coast, crossing the Atlantic in a northwesterly direction is responsible for the temperate climate of coastal northern Europe.

Why do coastal regions tend to experience more mild winters then continental regions?

Coastal regions tend to experience more mild winters due to the moderating effects of the ocean. The ocean has a higher heat capacity than land, which helps to keep coastal areas warmer in winter and cooler in summer. This moderating effect is known as a maritime climate, which leads to smaller temperature variations compared to the more extreme temperature changes in continental regions.

How does the Gulf Stream influence the climate on the western coast of Norway?

A surface current warms or cools the air above it, influencing the climate of the land near the coast.

Is the gulf stream a location?

Not exactly. It is an ocean current which brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico to the north west coast of Europe. Were it not for this current the climate in these areas would be much different.

How does the circulation of warm water affect climate of some coastal lands?

A warm ocean current (like the Gulf Stream warming Western Europe) can make the climate much milder than it would be without the warm current. Canada, at the same latitude as Britain, is very much colder because it has no Gulf Stream!
