How many years do respiratory therapists have to attend college?

Most colleges that offer programs in Respiratory Care are Community Colleges. However, there are several four year colleges now starting to offer four year degrees in Respiratory Care. I'm a Respiratory Therapist who graduated from a four year college. In my education, I was taught that a four year program is designed to prepare prospective therapists for the advanced level of Respiratory Therapy. A two year degree allows one to enter the field "entry level". As a Respiratory Therapist (RT), you have different credentials awarded by the NBRC (National Board of Respiratory Care). The entry level therapist is known as a CRT (Certified Respiratory Therapist. After passing the NBRC's CRT exam, a person with a four year degree is eligible to sit for the RRT exam (RRT is Registered Respiratory Therapist). This can be somewhat important because not only does it provide you with a little more job security, but in a lot of cases, an RRT earns more money. Unfortunately for me, this is not the case. I am an RRT, but at my hospital, it doesn't mean more money. But I do have several friends who I went to RT school with who do make more with the RRT credential. In summary, I guess you really only need to go to college for two years, but a four year program should take you further.

Is there an associated degree for therapists?

It depends on what type of therapist you are referring to. There are such careers as Physical Therapist Assistant, Respiratory Therapist, Occupational Therapist Assistant, etc. at the associate level. Then there are others such as therapists within the field of mental health that are at the masters and more often the doctorate level.

What is the job of the respiratory?

A respiratory therapist is an indispensable part of the health care team, both in hospital and in home care settings. The primary goal of any respiratory therapist is to help a patient improve their ability to breathe comfortably, through a variety of medications, extensive equipment and through training or education of patients. There are diverse fields into which the respiratory therapist can enter, with most being employed by hospitals for in-hospital care. Many other therapists of this type may work in home care settings to help set up, maintain, and instruct people on using needed equipment or medications. There are actually two types of respiratory therapists, and at minimum, a therapist of this type will have an associate degree, at least two years of college training in their field, prior to being employable. After completing an associate degree, the respiratory therapist takes an examination to become a certified respiratory therapist (CRT). This exam may be taken too if the therapist completes four years of college. The next level up in this field is further education, and two more examinations, usually taken after receiving a four-year degree.
