I guess you mean New Mexico. Most of it was acquired at the end of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), when Mexico was forced to cede the New Mexico territories north of the Mesilla Valley. A few years later, at the Gadsden Purchase (1953) all the remaining southern territories were purchased from Mexico.
