The simplest way is to press and hold the Ctrl key and then click on the other cells you want. As long as you keep the Ctrl key held, any cells you select will remain selected. It can also be done using the F8 key to turn the selection and extend modes on and off, but that is far more awkward, so just use the Ctrl key and the mouse.

Select your first range in the normal way. Then press and hold the Ctrl key and with the mouse select the next area. The original area will remain selected. If you do this you can select cells that are non adjacent. A less common way to do it is using the F8 key. Put the cursor in the first cell. Press the F8 key. To select several adjacent cells use the arrow keys. To stop the selection press F8 again. To stop the selection but retain the selected cell and move to a non-adjacent cell to select again, press and hold the Shift key and then press F8. Go to the cell you want using the cursor keys and then press the F8 key when you want to start selecting again. You could also just drag the mouse over different areas of the worksheet having pressed Shift and F8, in the same way as you can with the Ctrl key. Within a formula cells that are not adjacent can be specified by listing them with a comma in between them. Ranges are specified with colons. It is possible to use both: =SUM(A1:A20,B16,C45,D11:D13)
When you select a column header in Excel, all the cells in that column are selected. This means 65536 cells (the maximum number of rows in Excel). Select the columns as normal and use the sort icon, or command on the Data menu to sort them. If you have more than one column selected, the column in which the active cell is will be used to sort. If you want to sort on a number of combinations, like surname and then firstname, that can be done through the data menu. Blank cells will be sorted to the end and the rest of the data will be sorted as usual.
Select cells across more than one column. Then use the Merge Cells option to bring them together as a larger cell which will span across the column.

Click on the row header or column header. Press Ctrl-Spacebar to select a column. Press Shift-Spacebar to select a row. If you have cells in more than one column or row selected when you do either of these it will select all of the columns or rows that have selected cells. If you go to the first cell in a completely blank row and press Ctrl-Shift right arrow, it will select the entire row. If you go to the first cell in a completely blank column and press Ctrl-Shift down arrow, it will select the entire column. If there is some data in any cells in the row/column or if you are not in the first cell when you do it, these commands will select part of the row/column only, depending on where data is.
Elements make up minerals, and minerals make up rocks. There are more combinations of minerals (themselves combinations) than elements.
