The Southern colonies, with the exception of Maryland, were not founded with religious freedom as a main motivator. They were very agricultural colonies, and a majority of the people came to the South for the money that could be made there. The Middle and Northern colonies did have some agriculture, but much of their agriculture was smaller farms built primarily to support themselves. They also needed to remain small because these people insisted on being self-sufficient and relied only on their own efforts as much as they could. The Southern colonies' large plantations required many workers for financial gain to be realized. By using slaves brought from Africa, every financial gain would be realized by the plantation owners. Profits did not have to be shared with others. Still, the Southerners were dependent upon the slave labor for their economy to work the way they wanted it to work. There were some larger cities in the Southern colonies, but the larger population centers were all located in the North. And while much of the North favored a strong central government that ran a "Union" of colonies, the Southern colonies were quick to defend their individual colonies' rights against a central, mostly northern, governing agency that would slowly usurp all of their rights as sovereign territories.
