The Limbic System, located between the inner border of the cerebral hemispheres, is sometimes referred to as the 'emotional brain'. It is a ring of structures including the amygdala (associated with fear and anger); the hippocampus (which helps to establish memories); the fornix (which links parts of the limbic system), and the hypothalamus (associated with thirst, hunger, body temperature, sexual function, and water balance). The limbic system is responsible for emotional and instinctive behavior including fear, anger, elation, disappointment, sadness, pleasure, and sexual feelings. It plays a key part in memory, interacts with the cerebral cortex to give conscious awareness of our feelings, and works with the hypothalamus to generate sex drive and arousal. The activities of the body that are governed are those concerned with self-preservation, among them, searching for food and fighting.
