Two current ($10 and $100) and many older bills carried portraits of people who weren't presidents. There is no restriction on the portraits chosen for US banknotes. The choice is determined by the Treasury Department.
The individuals who are on the US bills usually have contributed greatly to the American way of life. Most were founding fathers or presidents.
Washington ($1), Jefferson ($2), Lincoln ($5), Jackson ($20) and Grant ( $50) are the presidents who are shown on current US bills.

There are only five presidents on current US folding money, namely, Washington($1), Jefferson($2), Lincoln($5), Jackson($20) and Grant.($50). Cleveland, McKinley and Madison have appeared on past US bills.
On the current bills in circulation, only Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hamilton were not presidents. Various bills and certificates were issued that pictures a variety of Secretaries of the Treasury, including Salmon P. Chase, Robert Morris and thomas hendricks, as well as others such as Lewis and Clark and Daniel Webster.

Hamilton is one of only two non-presidents on current US bills; the other is Benjamin Franklin on the $100 bill. The back (reverse) shows the US Treasury Building. For current US bills, it's pretty straightforward: it's written in small print on the front.
