Within the Roman Empire, it was only the Jews who practiced guerrilla tactics (not terrorism) against the Romans during their various rebellions. Later in history the Jews revolted against the Byzantine emperor Heraclius and joined the Persian Emperor Khosrau II during the Byzantine-Sasanian War of 602-628. It started during the Siege of Antioch (in Syria) in 613 when the Persians managed to hold on to their conquests in Syria and the Jews joined him and culminated with the conquest of Jerusalem in 614 by a joint Persian-Jewish force. However, this was regular warfare, not guerrilla or terrorism.

What are facts about terrorism in the past?

Terrorism's fascinating history is integral to the modern history of nations and states. Various forms of terrorism have existed throughout history. Terrorist acts or the threat of such action have been in existence for millennia. The earliest known organization that exhibited aspects of a modern terrorist organization was the Zealots of Judea. Known to the Romans as sicarii, or dagger-men , they carried on an underground campaign of assassination of Roman occupation forces, as well as any Jews they felt had collaborated with the Romans. Their motive was an uncompromising belief that they could not remain faithful to the dictates of Judaism while living as Roman subjects. Eventually, the Zealot revolt became open, and they were finally besieged and committed mass suicide at the fortification of Masada. The French Revolution provided the first uses of the words "Terrorist" and "Terrorism". Use of the word "terrorism" began in 1795 in reference to the Reign of Terror initiated by the Revolutionary government. The agents of the Committee of Public Safety and the National Convention that enforced the policies of "The Terror" were referred to as 'Terrorists".
