I don't know anything about Vonage, but I've just started using Skypeâ„¢ and love it. The people I've called can't tell the difference and I love the fact that I can talk to my buddy in Afghanistan for free as well as my wife when I'm in Iraq.

User frustration with Skypeâ„¢ has been gradually rising in the last few years, as promised fixes, features and improvements have not appeared or have appeared with unreasonable delays. Compared to regular land line service, Skype is not as good. The end-to-end delay can be 0.5 to 1 second, so conversations aren't as natural or spontaneous as talking over a land line, where the delays are well under 0.2 second. One needs to pause after saying something so that the other party or parties get a chance to respond. Even though it is full duplex, in practice it is more like a simplex data link, much like walkie-talkies, where you say something on the radio, then say "over", and listen for the response. While sound quality is generally good using a DSL or faster connection with a VoIP service such as Skype, due to unpredictable packet delays or lost packets there may be drop-outs or strange garbling of the sound at times, something that one rarely encounters with regular land line service. Skype does not support emergency service numbers, such as E911 in the United States. Therefore, it should not be used as the sole means of communication from the home; one should continue to maintain a regular land line.
