Metadata are data about data. There are two kinds of metadata: "data about data content", and "data about data containers". Consider a file with a picture. The picture or the pixels inside the file are data. A description of the picture, such as "3 cute kittens, April 2012" are "data about data content", a kind of summary of the data. A description of the picture, like "JPEG format, 300x400 pixels", are "data about data container", because it describes how the contents of the file are stored, although they are not the actual data. A library card catalog contains "data about data content", a kind of summary of the data - the author, the time of creation, etc.

You find any image on the web (google) right click it and than press save image as, press your original profile picture, click upload from computer, click the saved image file crop the image to your liking, press set as profile picture, and... Done!

There appears to be no format that uses 2-bit color. There is however a 1-bit bitmap (BMP) format that provides 2 'colors' only (i.e. color or no color).

The simplest way to change a file format is to save a copy in the new format. Don't lose the original in case the change does not work or gives a file unreadable on your image-processor!
