Subduction of nazca plate beneath TE south American plate since nazca plate is an oceanic plate, which means it is more dense than the south American plate, which is continental. Oceanic plates have 3.0g/cm^3 of density. Continental have 2.8g/cm^3 of density. Denser plate always sinks beneath less dense plates :)
The most common type of plate boundary is a convergent/compressional/destructive plate boundary. The plates are moving together. Examples of this are: Soufriere Hills volcano - the Atlantic plate is subducting underneath the Caribbean plate. Mt Pinatubo - the Phillippine plate is subducting beneath the indo-Australian plate.
