It's a little difficult to say. There have been a lot more threats and plots than there have been actual attempts. The threat levels vary greatly among the recorded instances. Some attempts involved generally targeting the White House without actually knowing where the President is. Some would-be assassins change their minds or fail to find a suitable opportunity, or they are discovered and arrested during the planning stage. Several Presidents have been in serious danger but only once during their presidencies.

After much consideration I have narrowed my answer down to five Presidents, each of whom has faced serious, life threatening imminent danger on more than one occasion during his presidency:

  • Abraham Lincoln
  • Harry Truman
  • Gerald Ford
  • Bill Clinton
  • Barack Obama

John Wilkes Booth was not the first to fire at Lincoln's head.

Letter bombs were sent to Harry Truman and high-ranking White House staff. Thanks to a tip from British Intelligence after similar bombs were sent to high-ranking British officials, they were intercepted at the mail room and defused. A few years later two men intending to shoot Truman instead ended up in a shootout with White House police in which one of the attackers and, later, one of the policemen were killed.

Twice during Gerald Ford's presidency someone pointed a gun at him and pulled the trigger. The first time the loaded gun did not have a bullet in the chamber. The second time someone grabbed the shooter's arm causing her to miss.

While Bill Clinton was President someone stole a Cessna (a small plane) and tried to crash it into the White House. He died when he crashed into a tree on the White House lawn. The Clintons were not home at the time. The following month someone opened fire on a group of men in front of the White House believing one of them to be Clinton. Two years later when Pres. Clinton went to attend a forum in Manila a bomb was planted along his motorcade route. The Secret Service intercepted a message that led them to believe that an attack was imminent, so they immediately changed the motorcade route. That attack, it was later discovered, was planned by Osama bin Laden, a name most Americans had not yet ever heard at that time.

On two different occasions in the spring of 2013, Barack Obama was the recipient of letters laced with the deadly poison ricin.
