Yes, the Christians were blamed for setting fire to Rome; the emperor Nero was afraid of the growing populations that were turning to Christians, and so he thought he would scare them by torturing them in the gladitorial arenas, where they were ripped to shreds by lions. The fire, would give him an excuse to kill thousands of them. Strangely enough, the torturings in the arenas made people feel sympathetic towards Christians, and no one could stop the movements growth.

∙ 7y agoThe traditional answer is "the Emperor Nero", but that is only partly correct. Nero first of all did not set Rome on fire . Rome was a constant fire hazard all by itself and fires happened regularly - only this one was helped along by a strong wind and lack of a Fire Department. Contemporary sources tell us that Nero - who was far away when the fire started - rushed back to the city and organized the fire fighting. He didn't play the violin either during the fire, in case you were wondering.
People in ancient Rome were just as fond of conspiracy theories as the US citizens of today, and one that quickly took root was that the Christians somehow were behind the start of the fire. Chistians were at the time still only a small and rather obscure sect. The sacrament the Romans had heard of where 'the body of Christ' was eaten by them had moreover given them a reputation of indulging in cannibalism. It is uncertain whether Nero really believed this conspiracy theory himself, but he was not unhappy that there now was a culprit he could use to defuse the popular unrest. So he decided to go along with popular feelings.
