Why was it important for Hitler to invade Poland?

The National Socialist Government wanted German land repatriated back to the Reich that was awarded to Poland due to the Treaty of Versailles . The Poles had been occupying the Danzig Corridor for less then 20 years. The Treaty of Versailles split Germany into 2 parts and initially Adolf Hitler only wanted a highway/railroad link connecting the severed parts of Germany . The Polish Military regime was considering this request until Great Britain told Poland they need not negotiate with Hitler. As a result Britain offered a "War Guarantee" in the event Germany attacked Poland. Hitler felt betrayed by the arrogant disrespect of the Polish Military regime and the decision was made to re-conquer Danzig and the entire corridor. In all likely hood there would have been no WWII had Britain not offered a "war Guarantee" to the Polish Authorities.
