California is a state that doesn't have a lot of rivers or lakes. Our winters ( until recently) had a fair amount of rain that would recharge the ground water, but we are now using more ground water than we recharge. The vast majority of food, fruits, grains, nuts, rice, corn, raisins, cotton, diary come from California and is shipped around the world. To grow these things a lot of water is needed so water has be be moved from the parts with water to the parts without water. This is our irrigation and aqueduct systems. Both provide water for crops and for people. The center of the state where most of the crops is grown is actually a cultivated desert requiring water to grow crops. Billions are made and invested in California agriculture.
