POP3 and IMAP are a common misconception. They actually are:
MDA - Mail Delivery Agent
MTA - Mail Transfer Agent
MUA - Mail User Agent

Most email clients use one of three protocols to receive an email message. They are SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), POP (Post Office Protocol), or IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol).
There are more than 3 protocols at the application layer. Three well-known protocols are: HTTP - web page traffic FTP - file transfer traffic SMTP - email transfer

Email messages and the email protocols by definition are digital. Text is sent as digital characters. Video and audio attachments are encoded digitally.
Web-based email is a user service, providing a simple interface to use different email sending/receiving protocols, which POP3 is.
One of the protocols used is SNMP (simple networking management protocols). Note that this is not the only option.
