The International Dateline was defined with significant zigs and zags in it,
expressly to avoid imposing on any single town, city, state, country, or island
the Horror of always having two different calendar dates within its borders.
Life in such a place would be impossible on any modern civilized level.
Roughly 180o, the date line wiggles to avoid passing over inhabited land so that people don't have the complication of living with the dateline passing through their town.
If the International Dateline were on land, then any country, state, city, county, town, or farm it cut through would always have two different calendar dates. Life would be a constant total nightmare for anyone living and trying to read a local newspaper, go to school, make a dentist appointment, or run a business there.
The purpose of that is to avoid cutting any single country, island, state, city, or town into two different calendar dates. Can you imagine the chaos that would result if you had a doctor's appointment on the 14th but the date at the doctor's office was never the same as the date at your house ? Or if pay-day was on the 1st and the 15th of the month, but you worked in a building across town where the date was different from the date where you live ? Or if your rent is due on the 10th, but the landlord lives in a different date from where the apartment is ? Can you see where this going, and why it was best to avoid this kind of thing by zig-zagging the line a little bit here and there ? Note that if the Dateline followed the 180° meridian exactly, then the calendars in a part of Alaska would always show a date different from the rest of the USA.
I dont know, but I think International Falls is pretty cold in Minnesota.

The International Date Line is nominally the line of 180 degrees longitude, both east and west ...exactly opposite the Prime Meridian and half-the-earth away from it.The Line was drawn with some jogs and zig-zags in it for political reasons, mainlyto avoid splitting island nations or contiguous areas of national interest. It's so difficult getting to meetings and dental appointments on time as it is now.Can you just imagine what it would be like if there were two different calendardates on opposite sides of the same town or island ?
