Most towns in Utah and southern Idaho were settled by Mormons, as well as many in northern Arizona, western Wyoming, eastern Nevada, California, southern Canada, and northern Mexico. Some of the more well known cities that were founded by Mormons are Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, and St. George, Utah; Las Vegas, Nevada; Mesa, Arizona; and Cardston, Alberta.

The area called "Deseret" covered a very large portion of the American West - including all of Utah and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, and California. Mormons settled hundreds of cities and towns in "Deseret" including Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and many suburbs of Phoenix. Most of these towns are still in existence today.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormons") migrated west and settled in what is now Utah (along with parts of Idaho, Arizona, Wyoming, and Nevada) and which then was part of Mexico. They arrived in 1847 and are still the dominant religious group in the area today.
People flocked to California because they were seeking gold and riches, and gold had been discovered there. The Mormons changed the landscape of the west by moving there and establishing cities and towns in areas that were previously uninhabited.
