A number of South American capital cities are currently named after saints.

  • Santiego, Chile is named after St. James.
  • Asunción, Paraguay (full title: La Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción) is named after St. Mary.

A number of other South American capital cities originally were named after saints or had religious names which have since been changed.

For example:

  • Buenos Aires in Argentina, was originally named "Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre" after St. Mary.
  • Bogotá in Columbia, was originally named "Santa Fé de Bacatá" where Santa Fé translates into English as "holy faith"
  • Caracas in Venezuela was founded as "Santiago de León de Caracas" where "Santiago" translates as per the capital of Chile.

In Central America, there are two countries whose capital cities are named after the country. Panama (Panama City) & Guatemala (Guatemala City).

Additionally, the capital of El Salvador is similarly named San Salvador.

Mexico, while part of North America, may rarely be considered part of Central America. Mexico's capital, Mexico City, is also named for the country. It occupies the location of the Aztec capital, which was Tenochtitlan.
