The Persians began to suppress a revolt initiated by the Ionian-Greek city-state of Miletus. The following year the revolt spread and Eretria and Athens from mainland Greece joined in to assist them. This lead to the revolt spreading and the Persians, after putting the Ionian revolt by 493 BCE, turning to mainland Greece to install local tyrants who would keep the Greek cities quiet and not disrupt peace in the Persian Empire.

The overall result was wars which stretched from 499 to 449 BCE, after which the Persians gave up trying to impose peace and left the Greeks to go back to their usual on-going wars between each other.
