In ancient times it was fought over by Egyptians and Assyrians, Egyptians and Hittites, Hebrews and Canaanites, Hebrews and Babylonians, Hebrews and Persians, Persians and Greeks, The Ptolemaic Egyptian empire and the Seleucid Empire, and Romans and Persians.
During the Middle Ages, the Byzantines and Arabs fought over the area. Later, the area was fought over by European Christian Crusaders and various Muslim groups. The last of these Muslims were the Ottoman Empire, which controlled the area until the 20th century.
During the First World War, the Ottomans fought on the side of the Central Powers, and the area of Palestine and Israel was taken over by the Allies. Since the Second World War, it has been disputed by Israelis and Arabs through a series of wars, with the most heavily invested Arab group being the native Palestinians.
