Migratory. Most of the species we see in the US are migratory, meaning making nests in North America in our summer, then flying to Central and South America or the islands for a warmer period than our winter. Some species fly only as far as warmer parts of the US, such a Robins and Red-shoulder Hawks wintering on the Gulf coast as many people do. Some species fly from a high mountain elevation to a warmer lower elevation. So many North American species do migrate that some areas have almost no birds in winter and perhaps none that are there for the entire year. Some species have recently stopped migrating, such as Canada Geese which have become significant pests wherever they stay. Some species have extended their permanent range to the north, with warmer winters and more bird feeders, such as Cardinals and Mockingbirds. Some species are migrating erratically, so that Rufous Hummingbirds are occurring on the east coast during winter more commonly. Because so many species are classified as migratory, and all migratory species are protected by international treaties, only a few bird species in the US can legally be killed, except by regulated permits such as for duck hunters.
