Keep the letter short and to the point. Remember all you want the letter to do is get the recruiter to read your CV. A cover letter should not be more than one page; it should lead the mind of the reader to the bottom of the page where you have repeated your contact information (phone number, email address). A densely worded letter may cause it to be set aside in favor of the next one before the reader can find the pertinent information.

The key things it needs to contain are:

  • your name,address and contact details
  • address of the company
  • subject heading - the job you are applying for and any reference number
  • a paragraph saying what job you are applying for and where you saw it
  • a paragraph pointing out how your skills and experience match what was required in the advert
  • a closing paragraph saying thanks for considering your application and the information for contacting you to set up an interview.
