A radical is a person who favors extreme change and is willing to use extreme actions, even violence, to bring about those changes. The Haymarket Riot caused many people to think that union members were radicals. In 1886 union members met at a place called the Haymarket Square in Chicago. Some of the speakers were anarchists. Just as the meeting was ending, someone then threw a bomb into a group of policemen killing or wounding several of them. The police then opened fire. By the time the riot was over, 50 people were injured and another 10 died of their wounds. Many people blamed the riot on union radicals even though there was no evidence that they were responsible for the bomb blast. Public support for unions dropped sharply after the riot.
"On strike" means they do not go to work in protest of something they think is unfair.
Police arrested hundreds of union leaders socialists and anarchists.

The speaches at the Haymarket Square Rally were aggressive and red hot, but broke no laws and the crowd was orderly. They were about to end the rally when the police arrived and ordered everyone to leave. Some one threw a bomb which killed seven policemen and injured more than 60 others. The police opened fire and four workers at the rally were killed. News of the incident caused anti-anarchist and anti-union hysteria in Chicago and in other areas of the nation. People were rounded up and tried for no other reason than they were suspected anarchists or union organizers. Four were hanged as a result of the trial. No proof was presented that they were guilty of the bomb throwing. They were tried because of their beliefs. This would cause many union supporters to fear for their safety and marked a decrease in the number of union workers.
