The Crimean War was fought by the Russians on one side and the British, French, Turks and the Kingdom of Sardinia (part of modern Italy) on the other. The reasons for the war, fought largely in the Crimean Peninsula (part of the Ukraine), are complex, but involved who should control the Dardanelles and Palestine. Essentially, the British and French came to the aid of Turkey to prevent Russian Expansionism. The war lasted from October 1853 to February 1856.

The Great War (it did not become known as the First World War until W.W.2 broke out in 1939) began on July 28th 1914 when The Austro-Hungarian Empire declared War on Serbia. Germany then declared War on Russia on 1st August 1914 and on France on 3rd August. Britain then declared war on Germany on 4th August 1914. Italy declared War on Austro-Hungary on 23rd May 1915. The United States did not join the Allies until January 1917. The War did not officially end until the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28th June 1919, but hostilities ended with the Armistice which occurred on 11th November 1918.

So the Crimean War was some 60 years earlier than the First World War
