They could if they wanted too. They passed through Sweden on their way to Norway. The swedish government let them do this. Sweden cooperated with Germany, that's why it never was occupied. It wasn't officially an ally, but they did help Germany (with the aforementioned letting German troops pass through Sweden.)

Neutral countries such as spain and norway (not sure it might be sweden or both) were often targets for refugees because there was no fighting going on there.
All countries in the Nordic region (of which Sweden is one) and the Baltic states have traditionally close cultural and economic ties that go thousands of years back. As a member of the EU, Sweden has, of course, close ties to the central/western Europe. Germany is Sweden's biggest export market, followed by Norway, UK, US and Finland. Historical reasons (war, diplomatic incidents and commitment to countries that freed themselves from former Soviet Union) has led to a tense relationship with Russia. Militarily, Sweden is formally a neutral country, yet it has long had secret intelligence cooperation with NATO as well as Finland though it has only operated militarily in wars mandated by the UN, such as Afghanistan.
