What is the safest way to move your horse?

The safest way to move a horse depends on where your moving it to - if you are just moving your horse to another stall or a paddock, just fasten on a lead - rein onto the horses halter and away you go. If you are moving the horse in a trailer, it is easiest to take a horse blanket with a hood and fasten it on the horses, attach the lead - rein to the halter or harness, and thread the rein through a loop or notch on the trailer wall. Don't forget to put on the special, protective horse boots if your horse gets frightened easily!

What is a halter used for?

Well when the horse was a baby you should have kept a halter on a few days after he was born to get used to it. If you did not do that than you can get a halter and put it on loose so that it is not hurting him/her but tight enough so they cant rip it off. when the horse gets used to that then you can clip a lead rope to his halter and ask for a walk and it will take time but if the horse is still a baby it will take less time then a matured horse

How do you estimate a horse's weight?

Unless you have the tape measure that calculates the horse's weight it may be easier to go by halter size. The average horse per halter size is between 800 and 1100 lbs. When buying a halter there will be a tag with a list of sizes per lbs. of horse. Or if you know horses well enough you can just 'eye' it. I use the eye-it method but I've had a lot of pratice.

What is the best bit and bridle for the walking horse?

By walking horse I assume you mean the Tennessee Walking horse. I find that my TWH (and many other horses of other breeds) prefer bitless bridles, but bosals aren't good for walking horses because of their head action. The bottom tends to come up and hit them when they move their head, or so I've heard. I ride in a halter, and you can also get the Bitless Bridle. But other than the bosal, Walking horses will go in anything. If I have to have a bit I prefer a snaffle because it's so gentle, and the horses seem to like it better too.

Can horses go in tunnels?

yes they can they just might be a bit scared at first

What is a horse halter?

The halter of the horse is used to control them while you are not riding. They are made of cloth (or rope, or leather), and go around the nose, behind the ears, and attach around the throat with a latch. Unlike bridles, there is nothing in the mouth. A halter (also called a head collar) goes around the horses nose, around the back of the head and under the throat. It is used to lead a horse and is made of leather or fabric.

What is a bit used for on a horse?

A bit is used for control while riding. A bit should never be left in the horses mouth while unattended. To go along with that when removing your horses head stall and bit Let the horse push the bit out by his or her self pulling a bit out can do more harm than its worth to you and the horse. A bit can be a good thing but at the same time a bad thing. When choosing a bit make sure it fits the horses mouth right. A bit that does not fit right may cause your horse to act out with no warning and cause the horse not to respond when you are asking.

If a horse is loose without a halter what is the best thing to catch him with?

At a stretch, yes. It's not safe and certainly not recommended, but if you're desperate a shirt would work fine. Just slip it around the horses neck up by the head and gently hold it. A hand on the horses nose to guide the horse is also useful when leading this way, especially seeing you would have little control.

How much should you spend on a halter?

On a halter for everyday use nylon is the best. Most of these halters run between $15-20. Plus another $10 for a lead rope. If your buying a leather halter or leather grooming halter this will probably be $50 and up. If a show halter is what your looking for you will be spending much more. The lower end show halters that have silver plate can be had for around $200. A nicer show halter with sterling silver start around $500 and go up from there.

Should you use draw reins on your horse?

If you wish to get your horse to go on the frame, or "on the bit," then draw reins are an excellent way to make this happen. You can also try bungee cords, but some horses don't like those.

Would Soft rope or chains which are best to catch a horse with no halter?

Most horses can be caught with a soft rope around the neck. If the horse tries to escape, let it go until you can find a halter however. Do not knot the rope around the neck or you may lose it. Bridling a horse is a lot harder than putting a halter on, and some horses may react badly if they are not trained to accept a bridle. You or the horse may be hurt, and the bridle may be damaged. Less is usually best. depends on how good your roping skills are, i would suggest to bring along a bridle and lead so once you have caught the horse, you can put it on and lead your horse.
