There are six current Australian states being New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia, and two territories being the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and the Northern Territory.

There was only one original state, New South Wales, which was the eastern half of the continent, that part not known as New Holland.
