The Red wire is one phase leg "hot" and the Black wire is the other phase leg "hot" for standard 240 Volt household power supplies.

Using a voltmeter to measure ac (alternating current) voltage, from the Red "hot" wire to the White (Neutral) wire should measure about 120 Volts and from the Black "hot" wire to the White (Neutral) wire should also measure about 120 Volts. From Red to Black should measure about 240 Volts. A Green-insulated or Bare copper wire is the protective Ground wire. <><><>

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

What would cause a 12 volt motor to change polairity?

This assumes you have a 12 volt direct motor. You should be able to simply reverse the wires leading to the terminals. There should be two wires going to the motor. Change them around.

Can 120V cloth iron be used in 240V?

The answer is No for an iron that was sold only for use in US, Canada or other countries using similar household AC power supplies. Unless the iron has a switch on it, to allow it to be used safely in countries which use 220-240 volts as the standard household supply, a 120 Volt iron must only be used on the 120 Volt power supply that it was designed to use. If it does not have a switch to convert its voltage, it is highly dangerous to try to use a 120 Volt iron on 240 volts. If a fuse or breaker did not trip to break the power supply the iron and/or its flex would overheat so much that they would probably catch on fire - not only would that ruin the iron, it would be dangerous to you and your home! If you change the iron's US-type 120 Volt plug to a US-type 240 volt plug, the results would be much more dangerous because a 240 Volt circuit has breakers designed to allow a high current draw - such as for a kitchen range or a clothes drier - and those breakers may not trip to cut off the current if you could just plug in a 120 Volt iron without first changing its plug. That is why the iron has a 120 Volt plug and not a 240 volt plug!

How can I install a 110 receptacle alongside a 220 receptacle using the 220 receptacle wires for power?

While you can physically do this it violates the Electrical Code. 110 Volt and 220 Volt receptacles are required by the Electrical Code to be on separate breakers for safety reasons, this would put them on the same 220 Volt breaker.

What color of wires are found on a 120 volt duplex poutlet?

A 120 volt duplex outlet is the main type of outlet for residential outlet system. The wires are typically white and black, and there should only be two of them.

What household current do you need to power 460 volt motor?

There is no household current with which you can power a 460 volt motor.Normal US household power is 120/240VAC split phase. (Other countries have different configurations, but the answer remains the same.) Without a transformer, and a substantial power flow, you are not going to develop the voltage necessary to run a 460 volt motor. Even if you could generate that voltage, you still only have one phase available, and most 460 volt motors require three phase power. You could do this with an inverter, or a motor-generator set, but to be blunt, you are asking about a commercial application, not a household application.

How much current flows in a 12 watt radio connected to 120 volt circuit?

A 120V household electrical outlet supplies 12 watts of powerwhen the current is 0.1 Ampere (and the power factor is 100%).

Can you wire a 12 volt power outlet into your cigarette lighter?

A power outlet can be wired int a cigarette lighter. The wires will have to be cut, with the power off. Then the wires will need to be connected back together while adding the power outlet wires. The Connection will have to be a proper connection, preferably with crimp connectors.

What is a Variable 0 - 12V dc power supply?

A variable power supply has a control to adjust the DC output voltage from 0 to 12 volts. It is used for testing electric project's such as amplifiers and other electric devices. It can be used to replace other fixed voltages power supplies such as the srandard 3 volt, 5 volt, 9 volt and 12 volt units.
