Britain can claim Newfoundland as British Territory as far back as 1497 and John Cabot. Rupert's Land was claimed by Britain on May 2, 1670. British claims to Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia date from 1792. Britain acquired Quebec (which at the time included much of present-day Ontario and extended into the Ohio Valley) with the surrender of the French troops at Montreal on September 8, 1760. By the British North America Act, Britain granted independence to Canada on July 1, 1867. Canada was the first country to be created by legislation.
