  • Pippin the Hunchback, born in 769, who might or might not have been legitimate, and who died in a monastery in 811
  • Charles the Younger, born in 772, who was crowned King of the Franks, but died in 811, before he could take over from Charlemagne
  • Carloman, born in 777, who was crowned King of Italy and died in 810
  • Louis the Pious, born 1n 778, who was King of Aquitaine, junior emperor from 813, and Charlemagne's successor
  • Lothair, a twin brother of Louis, born in 778, who died as an infant in 778
  • at least four other illegitimate sons

Charlemagne (742 AD-814 AD) had ten known wives or concubines. With them, he had twenty children. His first relationship, Himiltrude, gave him two children. His first wife, Desiderata, gave him no children and the marriage lasted only one year. His second wife, Hildegard, died in 783, but by her he had nine children. Fastrada, his third wife, gave birth to two more of his children. His fourth wife, Luitgard, died childless. He also had five known concubines which he had seven children with.
