Bushranger was the Australian term coined for those who were initially absconded convicts who 'ranged in the bush' (comparatively few convicts were held in prison - the colony was generally an 'open prison' with periodic muster roll calls, most convicts moving around freely in their allotted jobs, so taking french leave was simple). The name originated in the early 1800s and these 'bush rangers' gained sustenance from preying on isloated shepherds' huts and farmhouses. Later bushrangers were not necessarily escaped convicts or even already criminal. Some were merely men whose families had fallen on hard times and needed money, and bushranging was an easy way to get it. These bushrangers moved into cattle duffing, highway robbery and banks, especially once the goldrushes started. Remote bush tracks and coach routes provided ideal opportunities to ambush solo travellers and the coaches which not only transported well-to-do landowners and traders, but also gold from the diggings.
