Larissa Alexandrova-Popova won the first gold medal (rowing) at the 1980 Olympic games in Moscow. After her sports career, she dedicated herself to the promotion of women in sport and was awarded the 2003 IOC Women and Sport Trophy for the European continent in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the promotion of women in sports administration and sport in general within our countries.

Another famous athlete is canoeist Nicolae Juravschi who, in tandem with Belarusian athlete Victor Reneiskii, won two gold medals at the Olympic games in Seoul in 1988. The Barcelona Games were the last at which the republics of the Soviet Union fielded a 'unified' team. In Barcelona, Moldova was represented by 11 athletes who won a total of 5 medals: 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze.

During the era of the Soviet Union the Moldovan athletes took 18 medals: 6 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze.

The Republic of Moldova's Olympic team that for the first time paraded at the Centenary Olympics in 1996 was made up of 42 athletes. They did very well. Seoul Olympic champions Nicolae Juravschi and Victor Reneiskii confirmed their talent by winning the silver medal in the double canoe 500m event. Greco-Roman wrestler Serghei Mureico won a bronze medal in the 130k category. Another 6 Moldovan athletes took part in Olympic finals.

Moldova has always shown itself to have excellent athletes and at the Sydney Olympics took a silver medal in shooting with Oleg Moldovanu and a bronze in boxing with Vitalie Grusac.

A team of 35 Moldovan athletes took part in the Athens Olympics in 2004. The best results were obtained by Alexandru Bratan who came 4th in his Weightlifting category and Victor Bivol who came 5th in his category in judo.

As concerns the Winter Games, the Republic of Moldova sent athletes to the Lillehammer, Nagano and Salt Lake City Games.
