Immortal Souls. They are the biggest under-rated band of all times, yet they are good enough to BE the top.
(Please see discussion before adding to this answer) Unfortunately I can't give you a real answer to this as it all comes down to taste unless you compare bands by record sales so instead, I suggest this should be a list of any (in your opinion) good death metal bands, including fusion and sub-genres such as melodeath, blackened death, and death/doom.Death metal bandsDeathMelodic death metal bandsDark TranquilityAt The GatesNortherKalmahIn Flames (early stuff)Amon Amarth (although it can be questioned whether this is melodeath or viking)Ensiferum (same as for amon amarth)Wintersun (ditto)SkyfireMors Principium Est (weird fusion of melodeath with euro-industrial)Children of Bodom (early stuff)Technical death metal bandsArsisMeshuggahBlackened death metal bandsDissectionBehemoth
In terms of record sales, most would probably list one of these Gothenburg/'Melodeath' bands, which really aren't Death Metal. As far as actual impact on the scene goes, it would be Bathory, who were basically the cog in the mechanism from which Death Metal bands developed in Europe (vs. American bands, who took their que from Possessed).
Tie between inflames and arch enemy!
No real statistics on this, not to mention numbers would be skewed based on what the perceptions of Death Metal are by various people... for example, a lot of the purists (myself included) tend to exclude these Gothenburg/"Melodeath" bands, which tend to be derived more from Speed and Power Metal, and don't have much - if any - commonality with Death Metal bands. For a rough estimate you can go over to Metal Archives and search by genre.

Swedish band Dark Tranquillity plays melodic death metal, also referred to as melodeath. Melodic death metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music, and was pioneered by bands Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates and In Flames in the early to mid-1990s.
Don Caballero is the best math rock bands to listen to.
I'd say Dethklok, even though they are fictional, but they did get the highest US entry in the charts for a black metal band. I'd also be inclined to say Dimmu Borgir, but that's just cos they are my personal favourites... :-p
There are none.
