The Aztecs' main and most powerful god was the Sun god Huitzilopochtli. The Aztecs held a ceremony every year called The Great Fire, during which thousands of captives from rebelling cities were sacrificed to stop the world from being destroyed. It think it was held to keep Huitzilopochtli happy. (Human sacrifices were the best kind of gift you could give a god.)
