Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert Anderson (hero of Fort Sumter), Lewis Armistead, Clara Barton (the angel of the battlefield), Pierre Beauregard ("The Little Napoleon") and there are tons mroe out there.

The most important person in the Civil War in the North was President Lincoln. After General Grant realized how the war would be won, he became the most important person. Next was General Sherman. Third, was the most unused and perhaps the most competent General, Early Thomas. Fourth would be General Mede, the northern general at Gettysburg. Fifth, would be General Custer. He defeated General Jeb Stuart's division with a regiment, and he did it more than once. (It did not work when he tried it against Chief Sitting Bull because the Indians had repeating rifles.) General Custer also destroyed Lee's potential fall back positions after the fall of Richmond. Sixth would be Fighting Joe Hooker. British Historians think that when Joe Hooker captured Chattanooga and destroyed the Southern lines of communication was the point when the South lost the Civil War.
